Minnesota is lake country, so it’s not surprising that there are so many beautiful, sprawling lakeside mansions in the state. Particularly around Lake Minnetonka, and in Twin Cities suburbs such as Orono, Edina, Wayzata, and North Oaks, wonderful, custom-built estates proliferate. And with so many gorgeous, sprawling, high-end homes in Minnesota, the state has developed a world-class residential construction industry.
These 15 top-shelf firms, primarily located in the Twin Cities region, cater to an elite, upscale market. They have designed and built some of the most expensive, complex, and architecturally unique homes in the Midwest. These residential contractors are all highly skilled, design-forward firms. Many of these firms have won awards for their custom homes and remodel projects, and many have had their work featured in annual new-home showcase events, as well as in magazines and books. Most of the contractors have been building homes in Minnesota for more than 20 years, and quite a few are currently being led by second- and third-generation builders.
If you are thinking about building a custom home, we recommend checking each builder’s license with the local licensing board, speaking to past clients, and using our bidding system to get competitive quotes from at least 3 contractors. Getting multiple bids is the best way to ensure you get a fair price and that bids include the complete scope of work. On the other hand, if you want to learn more about the cost of building a custom home in Minnesota, check out our cost guide article.
