Located in downtown Los Angeles, Pasadena is known in architectural circles for its fusion of Victorian and art deco homes. The architecture is diverse, perhaps best described as a mix of urban and suburban. The city is regarded as one of the best places to live in California and houses numerous restaurants, coffee shops, and parks.

This list compiles ten of the best residential architects in Pasadena. They were culled from a long list of firms working in the area, and after our editorial team took an extensive look at the work histories, affiliations, and previous projects. Several of these firms offer unique services and incorporate innovative solutions into their designs that only they can exclusively offer. A handful of the firms on this list are the architects and designers behind some of the area’s most recognizable, award-winning homes.

This list includes both licensed architects and residential designers who can both design stunning homes but differ in other services offered. Architects are trained in design, engineering, and project management and have passed a licensing exam. Residential designers typically don’t manage projects and plans will need to be approved by a structural engineer. Whether you choose to hire an architect or a residential designer will depend on your project needs and complexity.

If you are thinking about building a custom home, we recommend checking each builder’s license with the local licensing board, speaking to past clients, and using our bidding system to get competitive quotes from at least 3 contractors. Getting multiple bids is the best way to ensure you get a fair price and that bids include the complete scope of work.

Established in 2004, George Architecture offers a full range of design services for a variety of markets. It specializes in historic preservations, and its expertise for traditional architecture and design is known and respected. It utilizes stylistic problem-solving tenets and bases its processes on the AIA’s standard contracts and contract deliverables that involve schematic design, design development, construction documents, bidding and negotiation, and construction administration. The firm draws inspiration from the work and craft of notable figures such as Wallace Neff, Myron Hunt, and Charles and Henry Greene. The firm is familiar with numerous architectural themes from craftsman to Mediterranean-style homes, but perhaps George Architecture is best known for its contemporary designs that adhere to Japanese modernist principles.

We were especially struck by a project the firm has named “Arroyo Collection.” In its former life it was a two-story office building; it has has been reincarnated as a fascinating residence, featuring its own sculpture garden, spacious kitchen and dining area, and a master bedroom.

The Arroyo Collection is an extremely unique remodel and addition to an existing two-story office building with an attached split-level commercial garage and storage building on Mission Street in South Pasadena. Our clients converted the downstairs office space to a fine art gallery, the commercial garage to an automobile collection and workshop, converted the upstairs office to a living-dining-kitchen, and added a 780 s.f. steel-and-glass split-level master suite and surrounding decks. The result is a breathtaking example of a modern design creating warmth, capturing natural light, and providing abundant outdoor space in what once was a commercial office complex.
